A Little Nikon Background.
Nikon is a company out of Tokyo, Japan, that makes cameras, microscopes, binoculars, and measurement instruments. Nikon means "Japan Optical" (日本光学). It was founded in 1917 as "Japan Optical Industries Corporation" or 日本光学工業株式会社, but was shortened in 1988 to Nikon Corporation. Nikon is also a branch of the Mitsubishi Group. The name Nikon is pronounced differently all around the world. Nikons most popular cameras are the F-Series, D-Series, and the underwater cameras.
Nikon D50.
Now discontinued, the Nikon D50 SLR camera was a 6.1 megapixel entry-level camera made by Nikon. It was the companies first DSLR (Digital Single-Lens Reflex) camera aimed at the average customer. Upon arrival in June 2005, after being announced in April of that year, it sold for $900. The D50 used the F mount. It had a 23.7mm by 15.6mm DX format image sensor with 6.1 million effective pixels. Its LCD screen had 130,000 pixels and was 2" or 50mm corner to corner. The D50 used a Secure Digital (also used on the Nikon D80) instead of a CompactFlash card like older SLR models. Users could take up to 2,000 pictures on one charge due to the lithium-ion battery pack. The camera could take 2.5 shots per second in the continuous mode. There were also many replacement lenses to use with the D50. It was sold with either a single or double lens kit. The single included the Nikkor 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G lens, and the double included the 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G lens and the 55-200mm f/4-5.6G lens.
Digital Photography Review gave great rating to the Nikon D50, but by the end of 2006, the D50 was replaced with the D40.
The D50's competition included the Canon EOS 350D, the Olympus E-300, the Pentax *ist DS, and the Konica Minolta Dynax 5D.
What do I think of the Nikon D50?
I love this camera. I got mine in 2005 and I still use it constantly! It is very well built and has great picture quallity. Very easy to use and easy to transfer the pictures from the camera to the computer. I've taken thousands of pictures with this camera and it rocks!
So where can I buy a Nikon D50?!
